Evolution Korea Up until recently, the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. But silence is no anymore an option. The STR has been fighting to eliminate evolution-related content from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm. What is Evolution? Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process through which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. In time, this disparity in reproduction could result in the creation of completely new species. The word “evolution” originates from the Latin word”evolution” which means unrolling or revealing. However, the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term “transmutation” to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student. More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to produce offspring. In time this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the population. Natural selection is the process that drives the majority of evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass from exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations. Despite the fact that evolution has stood the tests of time and thousands of scientific tests, creationists have seized on the notion that the theory is controversial to claim that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have won a few victories in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's parent. It is crucial for scientists to stand up for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, anti-evolution sentiment has been rising. In the United States some states have taken steps to limit teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the elimination of textbook content about the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestral Archaeopteryx. While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, including fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists. The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. This belief is based on various reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions for example, such as the development of treatments and other treatments, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their view “theistic evolution.” It is sometimes called “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to change over time. Then the evolutionary changes result in new species like the original ones. Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in one event, called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created at the same time, and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also deny the notion of abiogenesis, and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is impossible. In general, the creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, some scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curricula. What is Creationism in Korea? When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks the evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution. STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it regards as the “atheist materialism” that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of trainee biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear however, they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the country. The KACR has achieved a lot through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that attracted the attention of college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today. On August 6 and 7 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR and its members have been delivering talks on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to create a Creation Science Education Center in the near future.
